WHA and Kirk S. Nevin Arena operate three (3) programs for beginner skaters. Each program advances the skaters' abilities from beginner to the WHA 8U Travel Mite Program. Depending on the skaters' ability, you may choose to skip one or several of these programs.
1. Learn to Skate (Administered by Kirk S. Nevin Arena/ISI Figure Skating) Click on the link for more information.
2. Little Pens Learn-to-Play Program. Kirk Nevin currently holds only one Little Pens session per season. Following participation in the Little Pens program, players are encouraged to join the In-House program.
3. WHA In-House Hockey. The In-House program begins instruction in November of each year. Practices occur weekly on Wednesday evenings. Enrollment opens in October and closes in early-January. The season runs through late-March.
The Westmoreland Hockey Association In-House Program is designed for new and beginner level players who are looking to experience the sport of ice hockey. The In-House program gives players a fun, safe and competitive playing atmosphere from ages 4 to 10 years old. Whether you are coming from the Little Pens Learn-to-Play program or you are a looking to have your child learn in a more structured environment, our program will give you the practice time necessary to advance your skills and enjoy the game of hockey! The In-House program operates as a feeder system for our WHA 8U Mite Program.
New for 2020. The In-House practices have moved to Wednesday evenings starting at 6:15 pm. This is a shared ice slot with the 8U Mite skaters. Westmoreland Hockey hopes that this change will allow In-House players to benefit from the coaching staff, developmental structure and station-based practices as implemented for our travel Mite program. In-House players will participate at their own pace, as a group, and will not be expected to keep up with the Mite skaters.
Full hockey equipment is required for this program. If your child has no skating experience, please enroll them in the Nevin Arena’s Learn to Skate Program before registering for the In-House Program. Information on that program is available on the WHA website and on the City of Greensburg web site: www.greensburgpa.org. This program replaces the former WHA Learn to Play Hockey program.
